Biographical crime drama Papillon from 2017 was directed by Michael Noer and written by Aaron Guzikowski. The story follows French inmate Henri Charrière (Charlie Hunnam), known as Papillon ("butterfly"), who was imprisoned in 1933 at the infamous Devil's Island prison and escaped in 1941 with Louis Dega (Rami Malek), a fellow prisoner and counterfeiter. Based on Charrière's memoirs Papillon and Banco, the screenplay also draws from the 1973 film version written by by Dalton Trumbo and Lorenzo Semple Jr., starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. Papillon made its debut on September 9, 2017 as part of the Special Presentations at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. This film marked the final production of Red Granite Pictures before the company closed in 2018.
