Mystery

A 2017 mystery film, Murder on the Orient Express was co-produced and directed by Kenneth Branagh and features a screenplay written by Michael Green, adapted from Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel of the same name. It marks the beginning of a Hercule Poirot film series. The movie includes an ensemble cast with Tom Bateman, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr, Michelle Pfeiffer, Olivia Colman, and Daisy Ridley among others, with Branagh portraying the iconic detective Hercule Poirot. The story centers on Poirot’s investigation of a murder aboard the luxury Orient Express train service in 1930s.

Principal filming started in November 2016 within the United Kingdom and used 65 mm film cameras, a rare choice in recent years. The film premiered globally on November 2, 2017 at London’s Royal Albert Hall. It opened in the UK on November 3, 2017 and in the U.S. on November 10, 2017 through 20th Century Fox. Worldwide earnings exceeded $353 million. Critics gave the film mixed reviews, appreciating the acting and production design but criticizing the screenplay and repetition seen in prior versions. Sequels Death on the Nile (2022) and A Haunting in Venice (2023) followed, receiving better critical feedback although with reduced box office success.
