A 2017 American war comedy-drama film, Last Flag Flying follows three Vietnam veterans played by Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne who come together again after one of their sons dies in the Iraq War. The screenplay was written by Linklater and Darryl Ponicsan, adapting Richard Linklater's 2005 novel of the same name. This novel serves as a sequel to his earlier 1970 work The Last Detail, making Last Flag Flying an unofficial continuation of that story's 1973 movie version. Principal filming started in Pittsburgh during November 2016. The film made its debut at the New York Film Festival on September 28, 2017, before opening in American theaters through Amazon Studios and Lionsgate on November 3, 2017.
