HistoricalHistorical actionWar drama

A 2017 war film, Dunkirk was created by Christopher Nolan who also produced and wrote it. The story follows the evacuation of World War II from Dunkirk through the viewpoints of individuals involved on land, sea, and air. The movie includes an ensemble cast made up of Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles in his first feature role, Aneurin Barnard, James D'Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, and Tom Hardy.

The film shows the evacuation with minimal dialogue. Director Nolan focused on building tension using camera work and soundtrack instead. Production started in May 2016 at the Dunkirk site, wrapping up that September in Los Angeles where post-production commenced. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema filmed the movie on IMAX 65 mm and 65 mm large-format film stock. Practical effects play a major role in Dunkirk. Thousands of extras were used along with historical vessels from the actual evacuation, plus vintage aircraft.

The film was released by Warner Bros. Pictures and had its premiere at Odeon Leicester Square in London just before opening in the UK and US on 21 July 2017. It earned over $530 million globally, becoming the top-grossing World War II movie until 2010s, when it was overtaken by Nolan's Oppenheimer (2023). Critics praised the screenplay, direction, editing, score, sound design, and cinematography. Some considered it Nolan’s finest effort, among the best war films ever made, and one of the greatest movies of 2010s. It received multiple honors including eight nods at the 90th Academy Awards such as Best Picture and Best Director. It ultimately won three awards: Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Film Editing.
