Call Me by Your Name 2017
Coming-of-age dramaIndependentRomantic drama
A 2017 romantic drama film, Call Me by Your Name was directed by Luca Guadagnino. The screenplay, written by James Ivory and also co-produced, originates from André Aciman's 2007 novel. This movie concludes Guadagnino’s "Desire" trilogy following I Am Love (2009) and A Bigger Splash (2015). Set in northern Italy during 1983, the story follows the romantic involvement between 17-year-old Elio Perlman, played by Timothée Chalamet, and Oliver, portrayed by Armie Hammer. Oliver is a 24-year-old graduate student working as an assistant to Elio’s father Samuel, an archaeology professor, played by Michael Stuhlbarg. Additional cast members include Amira Casar, Esther Garrel, and Victoire Du Bois.
The project started in 2007 when producers Peter Spears and Howard Rosenman purchased the rights to Aciman's book. Ivory was initially selected as co-director but withdrew in 2016. Guadagnino later took over, becoming the sole director and co-producer after scouting locations. Principal photography occurred primarily in Crema, Lombardy, during May and June 2016. Cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom used 35 mm film stock instead of digital methods. The production spent weeks setting up Villa Albergoni, one of the main filming sites. Guadagnino oversaw the soundtrack, which includes three original songs by Sufjan Stevens.
Sony Pictures Classics secured global distribution rights before Call Me by Your Name premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival on January 22, 2017. It had a limited release in the United States starting on November 24, 2017, followed by a wider release on January 19, 2018. Critics widely praised the film, especially for Ivory's screenplay, Guadagnino’s direction, Mukdeeprom’s cinematography, and the acting of Chalamet, Hammer, and Stuhlbarg. It earned multiple awards, including recognition for its screenplay, direction, performances, and music. At the 90th Academy Awards, it received four nominations—Best Picture and Best Actor for 22-year-old Chalamet (the third-youngest nominee in the actor category)—and won Best Adapted Screenplay, making Ivory the oldest competitive winner in any Academy Award category. The screenplay also won at the 23rd Critics' Choice Awards, 71st British Academy Film Awards, and the 70th Writers Guild of America Awards. Call Me by Your Name is now seen as one of the finest films of the 21st century.
