Biographical dramaCrime drama

A 2017 biographical crime thriller film, All the Money in the World was directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Scarpa. It is based on John Pearson’s 1995 book Painfully Rich: The Outrageous Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Heirs of J. Paul Getty, recounting the 1973 kidnapping of John Paul Getty III. The event involved his grandfather, billionaire oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, refusing to pay the kidnappers' demands. The film features Michelle Williams as Gail Harris Getty, mother of the kidnapped Getty III; Christopher Plummer as J. Paul Getty; and Mark Wahlberg as Fletcher Chace, a family adviser.

Principal photography commenced in March 2017 and concluded in August for a December 8 release date. Just two months prior to its planned debut, allegations surfaced regarding Kevin Spacey’s involvement in sexual misconduct, resulting in his departure from the film. By November, 22 scenes had been reshoots, completed within eight days, ahead of the revised Christmas release. Reports later indicated that Wahlberg received $1.5 million for the reshoots, whereas Williams was paid only $1,000,, igniting a debate over pay inequality in Hollywood.

The film held its premiere at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on December 18, 2017, followed by a United States theatrical release by TriStar Pictures on December 25. Reviews were largely positive, with praise directed toward the acting performances. Despite this, it earned only $57 million domestically against a $50 million budget. Plummer’s portrayal garnered special recognition and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
