Crime thrillerHeistNeo-noir

A 2018 neo-noir heist thriller film, Widows is directed by Sir Steve Rodney McQueen and features a screenplay written by Gillian Flynn and McQueen, adapted from the 1983 British television series of the same name. The story centers on four Chicago women who plan to steal $5 million from a local politician's residence to repay a crime boss after their husbands were killed during a failed robbery. This British-American production includes Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, and Elizabeth Debicki in the main roles, along with Cynthia Erivo making her film debut, Colin Farrell, Brian Tyree Henry, Daniel Kaluuya, Jacki Weaver, Carrie Coon, Robert Duvall, and Liam Neeson in supporting parts.

The movie made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2018, followed by releases in the United Kingdom on November 6, 2018 and in the United States on November 16 through 20th Century Fox. Widows earned widespread critical praise, especially for its direction, editing, writing, and acting—particularly Davis, Debicki, and Kaluuya. Critics noted how it combined serious dramatic elements with entertaining action. The film earned $76 million globally against a $42 million budget and received multiple award nominations, including one for Davis at the BAFTA Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
