Action adventureComing-of-age

Tomb Raider is a 2018 action-adventure film written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons, and directed by Roar Uthaug. It is an American and British co-production based on the Tomb Raider video game series, serving as a reboot and third entry in the film series that began with the 2013 video game, incorporating elements from its sequel. The movie stars Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, who travels to her father's final known location in search of answers about his disappearance. Supporting cast includes Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu, and Kristin Scott Thomas.

Principal photography occurred between January and June 2017 at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden in Hertfordshire, England, and Cape Town, South Africa. Additional filming took place in London, especially in East London. The film premiered in the United Kingdom on March 14, 2018 and in the United States on March 16, 2018, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. This marked the first Tomb Raider movie not released by Paramount Pictures. Critics responded with mixed reviews, and the film earned $275 million globally—roughly matching the 2001 original's unadjusted total and surpassing the 2003 sequel’s performance, a figure seen as its break-even point.

A follow-up was planned with Vikander returning, but it was cancelled in 2022 after MGM’s rights to the Tomb Raider franchise expired, and Vikander withdrew from the role. A new reboot is currently being developed at Amazon MGM Studios, intended to be part of a larger shared universe that will include a television series and a video game.
