The Sisters Brothers 2018
A 2018 Western film, The Sisters Brothers, was directed by Jacques Audiard who also co-wrote the screenplay with Thomas Bidegain, adapting Patrick deWitt's novel of the same name. This American and French co-production marked Audiard’s first venture into English-language cinema. Starring John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix as the infamous assassin brothers Eli and Charlie Sisters, the story follows them in pursuit of Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed, two men joined in their quest for gold.
The film premiered internationally at the Venice International Film Festival on 2 September 2018, winning the Silver Lion for Best Direction. It opened theatrically in the United States on 21 September 2018. Critics responded favorably, particularly praising acting, character development, direction and music. Despite this, it underperformed commercially, earning $14.1 million worldwide against its $38 million budget. This film was the final feature work featuring Rutger Hauer, who passed away before its release, though he had completed filming several projects that were released afterward.
