Satirical

A 2018 American satirical drama film, The Other Side of the Wind was co-written, co-edited, and directed by Orson Welles. It was posthumously released after 48 years of development. The movie features actors John Huston, Bob Random, Peter Bogdanovich, Susan Strasberg, and Oja Kodar.

Originally conceived as a comeback project for Welles following extended time abroad, the film commenced production in 1970 and continued sporadically until 1976. Editing efforts persisted into the 1980s, but the film encountered significant financial, legal, and political issues that hindered completion. After Welles passed away in 1985, multiple attempts were undertaken to reconstruct the incomplete work. These versions became known as "the Holy Grail of cinema". In 2014, Royal Road acquired the rights, and the final version was supervised by Bogdanovich along with producer Frank Marshall.

The film employs a film-within-a-film structure, depicting the final day of an aging Hollywood director (Huston) hosting a screening party for his unfinished latest film. Shot using both color and black-and-white footage on 8 mm and 16 mm formats, it adopts an unconventional documentary approach with rapid editing between multiple cameras used by journalists and newspeople throughout the story. This style was meant to satirize not only Classic Hollywood's decline but also avant-garde European and New Hollywood filmmakers of the 1970s.

The Other Side of the Wind made its world premiere at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2018, and was subsequently released on November 2, 2018 by Netflix, receiving critical acclaim, along with a documentary titled They'll Love Me When I'm Dead.
