A 2018 action thriller film, The Girl in the Spider's Web, was directed by Fede Álvarez and features a screenplay co-written by Jay Basu and Steven Knight, adapting the 2015 novel by David Lagercrantz, which built upon characters from Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series. This film serves as both a sequel and soft reboot to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo from 2011. Claire Foy portrays Lisbeth Salander in the lead role, following her confrontation with the Spiders, a powerful secretive group aiming for global control. Supporting cast includes Sverrir Gudnason, Lakeith Stanfield, and Sylvia Hoeks with Synnøve Macody Lund.
The movie made its debut at the Rome Film Festival on October 24, 2018, followed by releases in Sweden on October 26 and in the United States on November 9 through Sony Pictures Releasing. Despite its ambitious premise, it failed commercially, earning only $35.2 million worldwide against a $43 million production budget. Critics responded with mixed reviews, though Claire Foy’s performance received recognition.
