A 2018 satirical absurdist film, The Favourite was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara. This co-production involving Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States features Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz in leading roles. The story unfolds in early 18th-century Great Britain, focusing on the rivalry between cousins Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, and Abigail Hill, who later becomes Baroness Masham, as they compete for the favor of Anne, Queen of Great Britain.
Filming occurred at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire and Hampton Court Palace, with principal photography running from March through May 2017. The film made its debut on 30 August 2018 at the 75th Venice International Film Festival, where it earned the Grand Jury Prize and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress awarded to Colman. It opened in theaters in the United States on 23 November 2018 through Fox Searchlight Pictures, followed by releases in Ireland and the United Kingdom on 1 January 2019. The movie proved commercially successful, earning $96 million globally against a $15 million budget.
Critics widely praised The Favourite, especially noting Lanthimos’s direction, the screenplay, and the performances by Colman, Weisz, and Stone. It received ten Academy Award nominations, matching Roma for the highest number of nods that year. The film won ten British Independent Film Awards, seven BAFTA Awards, and eight European Film Awards. Colman took home Best Actress honors from each of these award shows, including the Academy Awards and Golden Globes. The American Film Institute ranked The Favourite among the top ten films of 2018, and it has since been regarded as one of the finest works of the 21st century.
