A 2018 American science fiction action film, Ready Player One was directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Zak Penn and Ernest Cline. The movie adapts Cline's 2011 novel and stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance. Set in the year 2045, the story follows a world where most people live in the OASIS, a virtual reality system that helps them avoid their bleak real lives. A teenage orphan named Wade Watts discovers hints to a competition that grants control of the OASIS to whoever solves it first, and he teams up with others to finish before a powerful corporation can.

Warner Bros. Entertainment acquired the book rights in mid-2010, beginning the film’s development process. In July 2015, Spielberg became involved as both director and producer, and casting started in September 2015. Principal photography took place in England during June 2016 and wrapped up in September of that year. Industrial Light & Magic, Digital Domain, and Territory Studio created the visual effects, with some pre-visualization work by Third Floor, Inc.. The movie includes many cultural references from the source material, such as Back to the Future, The Iron Giant, The Shining, King Kong, and Godzilla.

Ready Player One had its premiere at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas on March 11, 2018 and opened in U.S. theaters on March 29 through Warner Bros. Pictures. Critics responded favorably, praising Spielberg’s direction, the visual effects, the quick pace, and the work of Sheridan and Rylance. The film was profitable, earning $608 million globally against a budget ranging from $155 to 175 million dollars. It received nominations for Best Visual Effects at the 91st Academy Awards, 24th Critics' Choice Awards, and 72nd British Academy Film Awards. The film won Best Science Fiction Film at the 45th Saturn Awards and earned two Outstanding Achievement Awards from the Visual Effects Society. A sequel is currently in development.
