A 2018 post-apocalyptic steampunk film, Mortal Engines is based on Philip Reeve's 2001 novel. The movie was directed by Christian Rivers and written by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Peter Jackson. Starring Hera Hilmar, Robert Sheehan, Hugo Weaving, Jihae, Ronan Raftery, Leila George, Patrick Malahide, and Stephen Lang, it represents a collaboration between production companies from the United States, New Zealand, and China. Set in a world where cities have been mounted on wheels and motorised, these massive settlements hunt smaller ones.

Jackson acquired the rights to the book in 2009, but development stalled for years before an official announcement in 2016. Jackson selected Rivers, who earned an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for his work on King Kong, to direct his first feature film. He also assembled several members of his production teams from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Principal photography occurred from April through July 2017 in New Zealand.

The film premiered worldwide on November 27, 2018 in London. It opened theatrically in New Zealand on December 6, 2018 and in the United States on December 14, 2018. Critics responded negatively, and Mortal Engines became one of the biggest box office failures ever. The film earned $85 million against a production budget ranging from $100 to 150 million, resulting in an estimated loss of $175 million for Universal.
