Biographical dramaHistorical drama

A 2018 historical drama film, Mary Queen of Scots is directed by Josie Rourke in her first feature film effort. The screenplay was written by Beau Willimon, adapted from John Guy's 2004 biography Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart. The movie features Saoirse Ronan as Mary, Queen of Scots, and Margot Robbie as Elizabeth I, her cousin and the English monarch. Supporting roles are played by Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn, David Tennant, and Guy Pearce.

The film premiered at AFI Fest on 15 November 2018 during the closing night. It was released in the United States on 7 December 2018 and in the United Kingdom on 18 January 2019. Critics gave the movie mixed reviews, commending the acting—especially Robbie's—and the costume design. However, it faced criticism for its script and various historical errors.

The film earned three nominations at the 72nd British Academy Film Awards. It also received two Academy Award nominations, for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, at the 91st Academy Awards. Robbie's performance resulted in SAG and BAFTA Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress.
