Halloween 2018
A 2018 American slasher film, Halloween is the eleventh entry in its franchise and directly continues from the 1978 original, completely disregarding all other installments. Directed by David Gordon Green, the film shares co-writing duties with Jeff Fradley and Danny McBride. Starring Jamie Lee Curtis in her return as Laurie Strode, James Jude Courtney takes on the role of Michael Myers, while Nick Castle makes a brief cameo appearance. Supporting cast includes Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, Haluk Bilginer, and Virginia Gardner. The story centers around Laurie Strode, who after suffering from post-traumatic stress, readies herself for one final confrontation with the escaped Michael Myers on Halloween night—exactly forty years following her original survival.
Following Rob Zombie’s 2009 sequel Halloween II, a follow-up had been in early development under Dimension Films but never moved forward. The studio eventually lost control of the franchise, which was later acquired by Blumhouse Productions, with John Carpenter involved. Director Carpenter, who disapproved of how Michael Myers was portrayed in the 2007 remake, intended to guide this next film toward a more terrifying experience than its predecessors. Filmmakers David Gordon Green and Danny McBride, both fans of the series, pitched their ideas to Blumhouse and Carpenter, which were then accepted and developed into a direct sequel.
Principal photography occurred between January and February 2018 in Charleston, South Carolina, with additional scenes shot that June. The film debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2018. It opened theatrically in North America on October 19, 2018 through Universal Pictures. Critics responded positively, praising Curtis' acting, Green's direction, and the movie’s atmosphere, with many calling it the best since the original and a strong comeback for the franchise. Box office performance was strong, earning over $259 million globally on a budget of $10 million. Upon release, Halloween became the highest-grossing slasher film in unadjusted dollars, surpassing Scream’s 1996 record, while also setting multiple other records. This film led to two direct sequels: Halloween Kills (2021) and Halloween Ends (2022).
