Green Book is a 2018 American comedy-drama film directed by Peter Farrelly. The biographical movie stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, and is based on the true events of a 1962 journey through the Deep South involving African-American pianist Don Shirley and Italian-American bouncer Frank "Tony Lip" Vallelonga, who later became an actor. Vallelonga served as Shirley's driver and bodyguard during this tour. The screenplay was written by Farrelly in collaboration with Lip's son Nick Vallelonga and Brian Hayes Currie, using interviews with both Lip and Shirley along with letters that Lip sent to his wife. The film takes its name from The Negro Motorist Green Book, a travel guide created by Victor Hugo Green in 1936 and published until 1966 for African-American travelers.
The movie premiered worldwide at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2018, where it earned the People's Choice Award. It then opened theatrically in the United States on November 16, 2018 through Universal Pictures, collecting $321 million globally. Critics gave the film positive feedback, especially highlighting the acting by Mortensen and Ali, although some critique emerged regarding its handling of racial themes and portrayal of Shirley.
Green Book was honored with multiple awards and nominations. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor (Ali), becoming the fifth film to win Best Picture without a nomination for Best Director (following Wings, Grand Hotel, Driving Miss Daisy, and Argo). Additionally, it received the Producers Guild of America Award for Best Theatrical Motion Picture, the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and the National Board of Review award for best film of 2018. It was also selected as one of the top 10 films of the year by the American Film Institute. Ali additionally took home Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, and BAFTA Awards for Best Supporting Actor.
