Romantic drama

Fifty Shades Freed is a 2018 American erotic romantic drama film written by Niall Leonard and directed by James Foley, adapting E. L. James's 2012 novel of the same name. The third and final movie in the Fifty Shades series, it comes after Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) and Fifty Shades Darker (2017). Produced by Perfect World Pictures, Michael De Luca Productions, and Trigger Street Productions, and distributed through Universal Pictures, the film features Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. Their relationship develops as they marry, but they face threats from Ana’s former employer Jack Hyde (Eric Johnson), who begins to harass them. This was Foley's final directorial work before his passing in 2025.

After the first movie opened in February 2015, planning for the sequels started immediately. By November 2015, Foley and Leonard were assigned to direct and write both films, which were filmed together in 2016. Principal shooting for Fifty Shades Freed began at the same time as Darker in February 2016 across Paris and Vancouver, wrapping up in July 2016. Music composer Danny Elfman, who had worked on the earlier films, returned to compose the soundtrack.

The film had its premiere in Paris on February 6, 2018 and opened in the United States through Universal Pictures on February 9, with a limited IMAX release included. Though it earned $372 million globally against a budget of $55 million, it made less money than the previous two movies in the series. Critics gave the film negative reviews, focusing especially on the script and performances.
