Dragged Across Concrete 2018
A 2018 neo-noir action thriller, Dragged Across Concrete was written and directed by S. Craig Zahler. The film features an ensemble cast including Mel Gibson, Vince Vaughn, Tory Kittles, Michael Jai White, Jennifer Carpenter, Laurie Holden, Fred Melamed, Thomas Kretschmann, and Don Johnson. It tells the story of two childhood friends and two police officers suspended for brutality who, facing financial desperation, become involved in a robbery orchestrated by a professional thief.
Zahler began work on Dragged Across Concrete shortly after completing development on his earlier film Brawl in Cell Block 99, which also featured Vaughn, Carpenter, and Johnson. Vaughn suggested Zahler to Gibson, with whom he had previously collaborated in Hacksaw Ridge. Gibson agreed to take part, followed by Kittles and White. Principal photography occurred in Vancouver from July through September 2017 within a production budget of $15 million.
The movie debuted at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2018. It then had a limited theatrical and video-on-demand release through Summit Entertainment on March 22, 2019. Critics offered mixed reviews; while praising Mel Gibson’s performance along with the film's dark tone and setting, they criticized its long runtime, graphic content, and acting choices. Though the film received multiple nominations at the 45th Saturn Awards, it failed commercially.
