Biographical dramaCrime drama

A 2018 crime thriller film, City of Lies follows the Los Angeles Police Department's inquiries into the deaths of hip-hop artists Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. The movie was directed by Brad Furman and features a screenplay written by Christian Contreras, adapted from the non-fiction work LAbyrinth by Randall Sullivan. Actor Johnny Depp portrays retired LAPD detective Russell Poole, while Forest Whitaker plays journalist Jack Jackson; supporting roles are taken by Rockmond Dunbar and Neil Brown Jr.

The film made its debut in Italy on December 8, 2018, appearing at Noir in Festival as part of the final day's screenings. It had a limited release there on January 10, 2019. Originally scheduled for a U.S. release on September 7, 2018 through Global Road Entertainment, the project was removed from that schedule in August 2018 after the company shut down. Eventually, Saban Films picked it up and released it on March 19, 2021, followed by a PVOD release on April 9, 2021. In France, the film premiered on September 5, 2021, shown out of competition at the Deauville American Film Festival, where Johnny Depp was a guest of honor. Critics gave the film mixed reviews.
