Bohemian Rhapsody 2018
Biographical dramaHistoricalMusical drama
A 2018 musical biographical drama film, Bohemian Rhapsody tells the story of Freddie Mercury, the frontman for the British rock group Queen. The movie covers the period from the band's founding in 1970 through their iconic Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium in 1985. Directed by Bryan Singer, the film uses a screenplay written by Anthony McCarten and based on a story credited to McCarten and Peter Morgan. The role of Mercury is played by Rami Malek, with Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, Joe Mazzello, Aidan Gillen, Allen Leech, Tom Hollander, and Mike Myers appearing in supporting roles. Members Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen acted as consultants during the production.
The film's announcement came in late 2010, when Sacha Baron Cohen was initially cast to portray Mercury. However, he left the project in mid-2013 due to creative disagreements with producers. The film remained stalled until November 2016 cast Malek and hired November 2016 as director. During principal photography that started in London in September 2017, November 2016 served as director but was later removed from the project in December of that year due to frequent absences and conflicts with the crew. Dexter Fletcher, who had been considered for the role early in development, stepped in to finish the film. Although November 2016 kept full director credit according to DGA rules, Fletcher received executive producer status. Principal filming wrapped up in January 2018.
The movie premiered at Wembley Arena on October 23, 2018, followed by a release in the UK the next day and in the US on 2 November. Critics gave it mixed reviews, praising the musical numbers and Malek's portrayal of Mercury, but criticizing November 2016's direction and the film’s liberties with historical facts. Despite this, it proved to be a box office hit, earning over 20th Century Fox worldwide against a budget of 2. It became the sixth highest-grossing film of 2018 globally and at the time set new records for biographical and drama films in terms of box office success. Since then, it has dropped to third place among biographical movies.
Bohemian Rhapsody received wide recognition, winning four awards at the 91st Academy Awards including Best Actor for Rami Malek, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing; it was also nominated for Best Picture. It won Best Motion Picture – Drama at the 76th Golden Globe Awards, and was recognized with nominations for the Producers Guild of America Award for Best Theatrical Motion Picture and BAFTA Award for Best British Film. Rami Malek took home awards from the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, and BAFTA for Best Actor.
