Biographical dramaCrime drama

A 2018 American biographical crime drama film, Billionaire Boys Club was directed by James Cox and co-written by Cox and Captain Mauzner. It depicts the social club and fraudulent scheme known as the Billionaire Boys Club. The movie features Ansel Elgort, Taron Egerton, Emma Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irvine, Thomas Cocquerel, Rosanna Arquette, Cary Elwes, and Judd Nelson in leading roles. The narrative is based on the real-life Billionaire Boys Club from Southern California during the 1980s, a group of wealthy teenagers who participated in a Ponzi scheme and later became involved in murder. This story had previously been adapted as a television film in 1987, with Judd Nelson portraying Joe Hunt. In the 2018 version, Nelson takes on the role of that character's father.

The project was initially announced in 2010 and filmed in 2015. It marked one of the final films actor Spacey completed before multiple sexual misconduct allegations surfaced against him in 2017. These accusations significantly influenced the film’s release timeline and promotional efforts. The movie debuted in the United States via video on demand on July 17, 2018, followed by a limited release on August 17, 2018 through Vertical Entertainment. It failed commercially, earning only $618, from 11 theaters during its opening weekend—marking Spacey’s lowest debut at the box office. Critics largely criticized the film, though Spacey’s acting was noted for being strong.
