The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is a 2020 American animated adventure comedy film directed and written by Tim Hill. It is based on the television series SpongeBob SquarePants and features the regular voice actors from the show along with new characters—both live-action and animated—voiced by Awkwafina, Snoop Dogg, Tiffany Haddish, Keanu Reeves, Danny Trejo, and Reggie Watts. The story centers on SpongeBob traveling to Atlantic City in an effort to save his kidnapped pet snail, Gary. This film pays tribute to the creator of the series, Stephen Hillenburg, who passed away in 2018; he also served as executive producer on this project. It marks the third theatrical release based on the original cartoon.

Work on a third SpongeBob SquarePants movie started in April 2015, just two months after the second film’s release. By January 2016, Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger was brought in to write the screenplay, and by April 2018, Hill was named director. This is the first movie in the franchise to be entirely created using stylized computer-generated imagery, unlike the first film which used 2D animation or the second film that mixed 2D and CGI techniques. The musical score was composed by Hans Zimmer, with animation handled by Mikros Image.

Paramount Pictures had initially planned a global theatrical release for the movie. However, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, those plans were adjusted. The film opened in Canadian theaters on August 14, 2020 and became available through Netflix in other regions on November 5, 2020. In the United States, it was made available as a premium video-on-demand option and as part of the launch lineup for Paramount+ on March 4, 2021. Critics responded positively to Sponge on the Run, and it received a nomination for Favorite Animated Movie at the 2022 Kids' Choice Awards. A fourth movie titled The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants was released in 2025.
