The Rental is a 2020 American horror film made by Dave Franco in his first feature film as director. Franco worked with Joe Swanberg to write the script, based on an idea from Franco, Swanberg, and Mike Demski. The movie features Dan Stevens, Alison Brie, Sheila Vand, Jeremy Allen White, and Toby Huss. It tells the story of two couples who start to feel they are being watched while staying in a rented home.
IFC Films distributed the film in the United States on July 24, 2020 through video-on-demand and select theaters. Critics responded positively to the movie, which made history by becoming the second film ever to reach number one on both VOD and box office charts in the same week.
