The One and Only Ivan 2020
A 2020 American fantasy comedy-drama film, The One and Only Ivan was directed by Thea Sharrock and written by Mike White, adapting the 2012 children’s book by Katherine Applegate. The story draws inspiration from the real-life events surrounding Ivan the gorilla. The voice cast includes Sam Rockwell as Ivan, with Angelina Jolie contributing to the production alongside Allison Shearmur and Brigham Taylor. Supporting voices are provided by Danny DeVito, Helen Mirren, Brooklynn Prince, Chaka Khan, Ron Funches, Phillipa Soo, and White. Human roles are played by Ramón Rodríguez, Ariana Greenblatt, and Bryan Cranston.
The project began development in 2014, with production starting in 2016. Casting occurred between October 2017 and May 2018, followed by filming in Florida during summer 2018. Initially planned for theatrical release, the film instead debuted on Disney+ in August 21, 2020. Critics offered mixed reviews. It received BAFTA and Academy Award nominations for visual effects but lost both to Tenet.
The One and Only Ivan was dedicated to Allison Shearmur, who passed away from lung cancer on January 19, 2018. The film was removed from Disney+ on May 26, 2023 as part of a content reduction effort under Disney CEO Bob Iger. It was later made available again on various video-on-demand platforms on September 26, 2023.
