A 2020 American romantic comedy film, The Lovebirds was directed by Michael Showalter and features a screenplay written by Aaron Abrams and Brendan Gall, with story credits to Abrams, Gall, and Martin Gero. Starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, alongside Paul Sparks, Anna Camp, and Kyle Bornheimer, the movie follows a couple who flee after witnessing a murder. Originally planned for theatrical release through Paramount Pictures on April 3, 2020, the film was pulled from that schedule because of the global pandemic closing theaters during COVID-19. The distribution rights were later acquired by Netflix, who released it digitally on May 22, 2020. Critics gave the film mixed reviews, though praise went to Rae and Nanjiani's performances.
