Shirley 2020
Shirley Jackson's life inspired a 2020 American biographical drama film directed by Josephine Decker and written by Sarah Gubbins. This movie adapts the 2014 novel by Susan Scarf Merrell, which fictionalizes events surrounding Jackson's work on her 1951 novel Hangsaman. The film features Elisabeth Moss portraying Jackson, alongside Michael Stuhlbarg, Odessa Young, and Logan Lerman in supporting roles. Martin Scorsese acted as executive producer.
The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 25, 2020, where Decker received the Special Jury Award for Auteur Filmmaking. It opened in the United States on June 5, 2020 through Neon. Critics responded favorably, especially praising Moss's acting.
