A 2020 thriller film, Promising Young Woman marks the feature directorial debut of Emerald Fennell, who also wrote and co-produced the movie. The film features Carey Mulligan in the lead role as a woman who pretends to be drunk in order to catch men who assault women while they are unconscious. The movie made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 25, 2020 before opening in theaters across the United States on December 25, 2020 through Focus Features. Critics responded positively to the film, especially praising Mulligan's acting and Fennell’s direction and writing. It earned $18 million globally. At the 93rd Academy Awards, the film took home the award for Best Original Screenplay, while also receiving nods for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Mulligan), and Best Film Editing. Fennell additionally won the same award at the Critics' Choice Awards, Writers' Guild Awards, and British Academy Film Awards. The Writers Guild of America placed the screenplay as the 23rd greatest of the 21st century.
