Biographical drama

Mank is a 2020 American biographical drama film centered on screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and his work on the screenplay for Orson Welles’s 1941 film Citizen Kane. The film was directed by David Fincher and adapted from a screenplay written by his late father Jack Fincher. It was produced by Ceán Chaffin, Douglas Urbanski, and Eric Roth. The movie features Gary Oldman in the main role, supported by Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Arliss Howard, Tom Pelphrey, Sam Troughton, Ferdinand Kingsley, Tuppence Middleton, Tom Burke, Joseph Cross, Jamie McShane, Toby Leonard Moore, Monika Gossman, and Charles Dance.

Originally, Fincher planned to make Mank after finishing The Game in 1997, with Kevin Spacey and Jodie Foster set to star, but that version never moved forward. The project was officially announced in July 2019, and principal photography occurred in Los Angeles between November 2019 and February 2020. To reflect the visual style of films from the 1930s, Mank was filmed in black-and-white using RED cameras.

The film had a limited release in theaters on November 13, 2020 and began streaming on Netflix on December 4. Critics responded positively, highlighting Fincher’s direction, the performances—especially those of Oldman and Seyfried—as well as the cinematography, production design, and score. Mank received 10 Academy Award nominations at the 93rd, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Oldman), and Best Supporting Actress (Seyfried), winning in the categories for Best Production Design and Best Cinematography. It also earned six nominations at the 78th Golden Globe Awards and six at the 74th British Academy Film Awards.
