Hamilton is a 2020 American musical historical drama film that captures a live stage recording of the Broadway show, based on the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. It was co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures, 5000 Broadway Productions, RadicalMedia, Nevis Productions, and Old 320 Sycamore Pictures, and filmed during three performances in 2016 under the direction of Thomas Kail, who also co-produced with Jeffrey Seller and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The musical’s creator, Miranda, took on the role of Treasury Secretary and Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, alongside the original Broadway cast members such as Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Christopher Jackson, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Daveed Diggs, Anthony Ramos, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Okieriete Onaodowan, and Jonathan Groff.
Originally scheduled for a theatrical release on October 15, 2021, the film was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and instead made available globally through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures for streaming on Disney+ on July 3, 2020. Critics praised its visual style, acting, and direction, making it one of the most-watched films of 2020. It was recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the best films of that year and received nominations at the 78th Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (Miranda), while Daveed Diggs was nominated for a SAG Award for Outstanding Male Actor in a Limited Series or Television Movie. The production was also nominated for 12 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning 2, including Outstanding Variety Special. A theatrical re-release occurred on September 5, 2025 to commemorate the musical's tenth anniversary.
