Tick, Tick... Boom! is a 2021 American biographical musical drama film directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda in his first feature film effort. The screenplay was written by Steven Levenson, who also acted as executive producer. It is adapted from the stage musical with the same title by Jonathan Larson, which recounts Larson’s journey into theater through a semi-autobiographical narrative. The movie features Andrew Garfield portraying Larson, supported by Robin de Jesús, Alexandra Shipp, Joshua Henry, Judith Light, and Vanessa Hudgens.
The film made its debut at the AFI Fest on November 10, 2021, followed by a limited theatrical release on Netflix. It was later made available for streaming on November 19. Critics responded positively to Garfield’s portrayal, the editing work, and Miranda’s direction. The American Film Institute recognized it as one of the top films of 2021. It earned a nomination for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy at the 79th Golden Globe Awards, Best Picture at the 27th Critics' Choice Awards, and Best Film Editing at the 94th Academy Awards.
Garfield won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, as well as the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actor.
