The Matrix Resurrections is a 2021 American science fiction action film that was co-produced and directed by Lana Wachowski. Lana Wachowski also co-wrote the screenplay alongside David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon. This movie marks the fourth entry in The Matrix series and serves as a follow-up to The Matrix Revolutions from 2003. The ensemble cast includes Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Lambert Wilson, Christina Ricci, Freema Agyeman, and Jada Pinkett Smith. The story unfolds sixty years after the events of Revolutions, focusing on Neo, who now lives a normal life as a video game developer struggling to tell dreams from reality. A group of rebels, assisted by a simulated version of Morpheus, rescues Neo from a new iteration of the Matrix and battles an unfamiliar threat holding Trinity prisoner.

After The Matrix Revolutions, the Wachowskis stated they would not be making more films in the franchise. Nevertheless, Warner Bros. remained interested in continuing it, even hiring Zak Penn to draft a script after the directors rejected multiple proposals for additional movies. In late 2019, the announcement of a fourth Matrix film came through, featuring Lana Wachowski returning as director, though Lilly did not join the project. Reeves and Moss were confirmed to return in their roles. Principal photography began in February 2020, but was interrupted the following month due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At one point, Wachowski considered ending the project entirely, although encouragement from the cast helped convince him to continue. Production resumed in August and wrapped up three months later.

The Matrix Resurrections debuted at the Castro Theater in San Francisco on December 16, 2021, then went into wide release through both theaters and the HBO Max streaming platform by Warner Bros. Pictures on December 22. Critics offered favorable feedback, although the movie did not meet financial expectations, earning just $160.2 million worldwide compared to its $190 million production cost. The film earned a nod for Best Special Visual Effects at the 75th British Academy Film Awards. A new installment is now being developed, with Drew Goddard set to write and direct.
