Action dramaHistorical drama

A 2021 epic historical drama film, The Last Duel is directed by Ridley Scott and features a screenplay written by Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon, adapted from the 2004 book The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France by Eric Jager. The story takes place in 14th century France and centers on Jean de Carrouges, played by Damon, who confronts his former ally Jacques le Gris, portrayed by Adam Driver, after Marguerite, his wife played by Jodie Comer, alleges that Jacques assaulted her. The narrative unfolds through three separate chapters that represent the differing viewpoints of the three principal characters. Affleck appears in a supporting role as Count Pierre d'Alençon.

The project was initially announced in 2015, but did not receive official approval until July 2019. That same month, Affleck and Damon were confirmed to star and co-write the film, with Comer and Driver joining the cast later in the year. Principal photography occurred in France and Ireland from February through October 2020, interrupted by a pause lasting several months due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Last Duel made its debut at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 10, 2021, followed by a theatrical release in the United States on October 15, 2021 through 20th Century Studios. Critics responded positively, and the film was honored as one of the top ten films of 2021 by the National Board of Review. Despite poor box office performance, it eventually gained financial returns in subsequent markets.
