Old 2021
Old is a 2021 American mystery thriller film written, directed, and produced by M. Night Shyamalan. It adapts the French-language Swiss graphic novel Sandcastle by Gael García Bernal and Frederik Peeters. The movie includes an ensemble cast with Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Alex Wolff, Thomasin McKenzie, Abbey Lee, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Ken Leung, Eliza Scanlen, Aaron Pierre making his film debut, Embeth Davidtz, and Emun Elliott. A group of individuals discover they are rapidly aging while stranded on a remote beach.
Shyamalan chose to turn Sandcastle into a movie after getting it as a Father's Day present in 2017. The unnamed project was revealed in September 2019, with the director sharing a collaboration with Universal Pictures. Principal photography lasted three months in the Dominican Republic during 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, under the direction of cinematographer Michael Gioulakis.
Old debuted at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City on July 19, 2021, and opened in U.S. theaters on July 23. The film earned $90 million globally against a $18 million budget and garnered mixed critical responses.
