Marcel the Shell with Shoes On 2021
AnimatedComedy-dramaIndependent
A 2021 American independent mockumentary film, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On was directed by Dean Fleischer Camp in his first feature film effort. The movie uses live action and stop motion animation together, and it functions as both a direct sequel and prequel to the Marcel the Shell shorts created by Jenny Slate and Fleischer Camp. Nick Paley co-wrote both the series and this film. Slate returns to voice Marcel, the anthropomorphic seashell character. Fleischer Camp, Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann, Lesley Stahl, and Isabella Rossellini also appear in the cast. The story centers on Marcel, who lives with his grandmother Connie after he gained millions of fans through an online short film, giving him hope to find his lost family. The film debuted at the Telluride Film Festival on September 3, 2021, then started a limited release in the U.S. by A24 on June 24, 2022, followed by a wide release on July 15. Critics praised it and it earned a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards.
