AnimatedMusical comedyMusical fantasy
A 2021 American animated musical fantasy comedy film, Encanto was directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, with screenplay contributions from Charise Castro Smith and Bush. Walt Disney Animation Studios produced the movie, while Lin-Manuel Miranda composed the original songs and Germaine Franco created the orchestral score. The voice cast includes Stephanie Beatriz, María Cecilia Botero, John Leguizamo, Jessica Darrow, Angie Cepeda, Carolina Gaitán, Diane Guerrero, and Wilmer Valderrama. The story centers on a Colombian family, the Madrigals, under the leadership of matriarch Botero. Her children and grandchildren—except for Mirabel Madrigal (Beatriz)—are gifted with magical abilities from a miracle that benefits their rural community, known as the Encanto. When Mirabel discovers that the family’s magic is fading, she embarks on a quest to uncover the cause and restore both her family and their home.
Encanto made its debut at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on November 3, 2021, before opening in the United States on November 24 following a 30-day theatrical release. It was shown in RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, 2D and D-BOX formats. Though it underperformed at the box office, grossing $261.3 million worldwide against an estimated $120–150 million budget, its streaming success on Disney+ began after December 24, 2021. Critics praised the film for character development, musical score, animation quality, voice performances, emotional storytelling and cultural accuracy. Themes of magic realism and intergenerational trauma were highlighted in reviews. Publications have labeled Encanto as a cultural phenomenon, with industry figures calling it a "franchise" within a year of its release.
The movie received three nominations at the 94th Academy Awards, winning Best Animated Feature, and also earned multiple honors such as the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature and the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film. Its merchandise has done well, and its soundtrack became a major hit, reaching number one on the US Billboard 200 and UK Compilation Albums charts. The songs "We Don't Talk About Bruno" and "Surface Pressure" were particularly successful, with the former topping the US Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart for several weeks in a row. A themed attraction based on the film is scheduled to open at Disney's Animal Kingdom in 2027.
