Drama

Cry Macho is a 2021 American neo-Western film starring Clint Eastwood in his final acting role, directed, produced by and written by Nick Schenk and N. Richard Nash, based on Nash's 1975 novel. The story takes place in 1979 and features Eastwood as a former rodeo star who is hired to help a young boy (Eduardo Minett) return to the United States to be with his father (Dwight Yoakam). Multiple attempts were made over the years to adapt Nash's novel into a movie. Arnold Schwarzenegger was set to star in 2011 but pulled out after a scandal occurred. In 2020, Eastwood’s version was officially announced; he produced it alongside Albert S. Ruddy (in his final film before his death), Tim Moore, and Jessica Meier. This film marks Eastwood's last starring role before his retirement in 2026.

Filming took place from November through December 2020 in New Mexico. Ben Davis served as cinematographer, Mark Mancina composed the score, and Joel and David Cox handled editing duties. The film premiered in the United States on September 17, 2021 via Warner Bros. Pictures, with a simultaneous 31-day release on HBO Max streaming service. Box-office performance was weak, earning $16 million against a $33 million budget. Reviews were mixed—praised for its cinematography and calm storytelling style along with the musical score, but criticized for the screenplay. Eastwood’s acting received divided reactions.
