Musical drama

Annette is a 2021 French surrealist psychological musical romantic drama film that represents a rock opera. This English-language directorial debut was made by Leos Carax, who also wrote the story and music alongside Ron Mael and Russell Mael, with lyrics co-written by Carax. The film follows a stand-up comedian (Adam Driver) and his opera singer wife (Marion Cotillard), exploring how their lives change after having their first child. Simon Helberg and Devyn McDowell also appear in the film.

A co-production involving France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, the United States, Mexico and Japan, Annette opened the 2021 Cannes Film Festival on 6 July 2021, where Carax won the Best Director award. The movie was released in France the following day by UGC Distribution and in the United States on 20 August through Amazon Studios. Critics responded positively to the film, though audience reception was highly divided.
