Biographical drama

Anita is a 2021 Hong Kong biographical musical drama film directed by Longman Leung, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jack Ng, adapting the life of singer and actress Anita Mui. Louise Wong makes her screen debut playing the lead role, portraying the singer's journey from early years through her final days before her death from cervical cancer in 2003. Supporting roles are played by Terrance Lau, Fish Liew, Gordon Lam, Miriam Yeung, and Louis Koo.

The biopic’s production started in the 2010s when Bill Kong, president of Edko Films, launched the project to honor Mui’s legacy. Leung joined the team and spent over a year writing the script alongside Ng, finalizing casting as well. Principal filming occurred in 2018.

Though its original 2020 release was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Anita premiered in Hong Kong on 12 November 2021, followed by select Southeast Asian countries within the same month. Reviews were mixed to positive, and it opened at the HK$12M box office during preview screenings. It ranks as the ninth most successful Hong Kong film ever.

An extended director’s cut including 1 hours of additional scenes was made available as a five-part miniseries on Disney+ through Star beginning 2 February 2022. A 4K re-edit version, 191 minutes long, was shown in Hong Kong theaters in October 2025.
