A 2022 American superhero film, The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves and features a screenplay he wrote alongside Peter Craig. It represents a reboot of the Batman movie series based on the DC Comics character. Robert Pattinson portrays Bruce Wayne / Batman in the film, joined by Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell. The story centers on Batman during his second year of crime-fighting in Gotham City as he investigates corruption linked to his own family, while also pursuing the Riddler (Dano), a mysterious serial killer and terrorist aiming at the city's elite. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film was produced by Reeves and Dylan Clark for DC Films.
The project began as a DCEU Batman movie in October 2014, with Ben Affleck set to star as the title character. By 2016, he committed to directing, producing, and co-writing The Batman but later withdrew due to concerns about the project in January 2017. Reeves then assumed direction the following month and reimagined the story to remove connections to the DCEU, focusing on an earlier version of the character compared to Affleck’s portrayal. Reeves collaborated with Craig and Mattson Tomlin on the script, emphasizing Batman's detective nature over prior films. He drew inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock's movies and New Hollywood, as well as comics like "Year One" (1987), The Long Halloween (1996–97), and Ego (2000).
After Affleck exited the starring role in January 2019, Pattinson was cast in May, followed by additional casting later that year. Production started from January 2020 to March 2021 but paused for months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The filming occurred across the United Kingdom, including locations in England and Scotland, as well as at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. Cinematographer Greig Fraser used Industrial Light & Magic's StageCraft virtual production technology, while Michael Giacchino created the film’s musical score. The movie contains more than 1,500 visual effects shots and ranks among the longest superhero films ever made. An extensive viral marketing campaign supported the project before and after filming.
Due to delays from the COVID-19 pandemic, The Batman premiered in the United States on March 4, 2022, three days after its New York City premiere at Lincoln Center. Critics responded positively, praising Reeves's direction, Pattinson and Kravitz’s performances, and the cinematography and score, though some criticized the tone, runtime, and third act. The film's interpretation of Batman sparked critical analysis, as did its themes regarding class conflict and inequality. It performed well commercially, earning over $772 million worldwide against a $185–200 million budget, becoming the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2022 and Warner Bros.’s top pandemic release. It set multiple box office records for IMAX screenings during the pandemic era. The Batman received three Academy Award nominations along with various other honors. Intended to begin a trilogy and shared universe titled the "Batman Epic Crime Saga", a sequel, The Batman: Part II, is scheduled for February 18, 2028. Additionally, a spin-off series featuring Farrell’s character, The Penguin, debuted on HBO in late 2024.
