A 2022 romantic fantasy drama film, Three Thousand Years of Longing is directed and produced by George Miller. The screenplay was written by Miller and Augusta Gore, adapting the 1994 short story "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye" by A. S. Byatt. The plot centers on a djinn (Idris Elba) who emerges from a bottle after being freed by a professor (Tilda Swinton), then shares countless tales from his millennia of experience. Starring Idris Elba, Aska Karem, Matteo Bocelli, Aamito Lagum, Sarah Houbolt, Lachy Hulme, and Tilda Swinton, the movie pays tribute to Miller’s mother Angela, as well as Rena Mitchell, a relative of producer Doug Mitchell.

It made its debut out of competition at the 75th Cannes Film Festival on May 20, 2022. The film opened in the United States on August 26, 2022 through Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (via United Artists Releasing), and in Australia on September 1, 2022 by Roadshow Entertainment. Critics responded positively, commending its visuals and acting, although it underperformed at the box office, earning $20.3 million compared to its $60 million budget.
