The Northman 2022
Action dramaEpicHistorical drama
A 2022 American epic period dark fantasy action film, The Northman is directed by Robert Eggers who also wrote the screenplay with Sjón. The story draws from the legend of Amleth found in Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus, following Amleth, an exiled Viking prince seeking revenge for his father's murder committed by his uncle during the Viking Age. The film stars an ensemble cast including Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Gustav Lindh, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe.
Robert Eggers and Willem Dafoe, both producers, had previously discussed working together; Robert Eggers chose to make this film his third project after meeting with Willem Dafoe, who had long desired to create a Viking-themed movie. Most of the cast joined in October 2019, with principal photography taking place across Iceland, the Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland from August through December 2020. Norse mythology heavily influences the film's content.
The Northman debuted at TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on April 18, 2022, although it had already opened in select European and South American markets starting on April 13. It was shown in the United States on April 22. Critics responded positively, but the movie underperformed financially, earning either $75.8 or $69.6 million with a net budget of $70 million. Despite this, it achieved unexpected success through VOD and home media sales, enabling substantial recovery from its box office shortfall.
