Unicorn Overlord 2024
Unicorn Overlord is a 2024 tactical role-playing game that was developed by Vanillaware and published by Atlus in Japan, with Sega handling worldwide distribution. The game released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Its setting takes place across the continent of Fevrith, which is caught in the midst of war. The narrative centers on exiled prince Alain as he gathers support to free Fevrith from Zenoiran Empire control. Players control Alain and his units during large-scale battles, with both movement and combat occurring in real-time.
The original idea for Unicorn Overlord originated with Takafumi Noma in 2014. George Kamitani, the company's founder, approved the concept, allowing Noma to take on the roles of director, programmer, and lead artist. The goal was to produce a contemporary take on classic tactical games from the 1990s. Development lasted around ten years due to overlap with other Vanillaware projects. The musical score was composed by Basiscape, a studio founded by Hitoshi Sakimoto. By September 2024, the game had sold over one million copies and received positive reviews. Critics praised its gameplay and visual presentation, although opinions on its storyline and design complexity were more divided.
