Role-playing

SaGa: Emerald Beyond is a 2024 role-playing video game developed and published by Square Enix. This installment in the SaGa series became available on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows. Players control six characters moving through several worlds linked to a place known as the Beyond. The exploration follows a non-linear path, where each character's journey advances by finishing tasks; choices made during play affect which quests or areas become accessible in later runs. Battles operate on a turn-based model emphasizing timeline changes, with character abilities improving based on actions taken within the game.

Development started in 2016 following the release of SaGa: Scarlet Grace, with full production beginning in 2018. The team featured series creator Akitoshi Kawazu as director and main writer, lead artist Satoshi Kuramochi, and Kenji Ito returning as composer. Kawazu intended to enhance the systems introduced in Scarlet Grace, broadening both storylines and gameplay features. Initial sales were modest, contributing to Square Enix seeing reduced income. Critics generally supported the combat design and musical score, although reviews noted inconsistencies in visual style and narrative depth.
