Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown 2024
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a 2024 action-adventure video game developed and published by Ubisoft. It belongs to the Prince of Persia series and brings back the 2D side-scrolling gameplay style from the first 1989 title. In the game, players control Sargon, a young warrior from the clan The Immortals, who sets off on a quest to mythical Mount Qaf to save a kidnapped prince. Throughout the experience, players discover hidden paths, secret areas, and enhancements that improve gameplay.
As the story continues, Sargon gains time-manipulation powers and can perform elaborate acrobatic actions. This game is classified as a Metroidvania, where different locations connect and allow for exploration. It marks the first major installment since Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands in 2010. Ubisoft Montpellier had previously worked on 2D prototypes of the franchise, and development officially began in 2019 when the team assembled included experts in world design and platforming mechanics. The combat system draws influence from 2D fighting games, while visual elements reflect Shōnen manga and superhero comics. The team’s prior work on Rayman titles also shaped production choices, aiming to update the franchise with classic features and prioritize player accessibility.
Gareth Coker and Mentrix created the game's soundtrack, making it one of the first video games to include a Persian (Farsi) dubbing option. The title was officially announced in June 2023, although its launch sparked varied responses among players. It launched on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in January 2024, followed by releases for Android and iOS in April 2025. Critics responded positively to its world design, combat mechanics, and ease of access but pointed out shortcomings in the storyline. The game was seen as a comeback for the series and among the top Metroidvania titles.
Ubisoft provided ongoing support with complimentary updates and introduced a paid expansion called Mask of Darkness, released in September 2024. The game attracted over three million users, though it did not fulfill Ubisoft's sales goals, resulting in the project team being dissolved.
