One Million Checkboxes 2024
One Million Checkboxes is a free web-based incremental game released in June 2024 by American software engineer and video game developer Nolen Royalty. The game features a web page with one million checkboxes that users can check or uncheck. When first launched, all visitors encountered identical checkbox states, prompting collaborative interaction as people selected and deselected the same boxes. Royalty stated it took two days to develop the site.
Despite expecting only a few hundred visitors, the game attracted thousands of participants and recorded over 650 million check and uncheck actions before shutting down two weeks later. Automated tools like Internet bots, scripting languages, and hacking techniques were used to quickly modify checkboxes.
The game received positive feedback overall. Several publications called it addictive and commended its straightforward concept, while others objected to bot usage on the site. In 2025, Royalty launched One Million Chessboards, a website featuring one million chessboards, as a follow-up to One Million Checkboxes.
