Role-playing

Metaphor: ReFantazio is a 2024 role-playing video game developed by Studio Zero and published by Sega. The game was initially revealed under the name Project Re:Fantasy in December 2016, with no additional details shared until 2023. It launched on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S in Japan through Atlus and internationally through Sega on October 11, 2024. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is scheduled for release on November 12, 2026.

Set in the medieval fantasy land of Euchronia, a realm resembling modern times, the story begins after the assassination of the former king. Years prior, an attack on the prince left him cursed and asleep for a long time. The main character, a young boy from the magic-using Elda tribe and the prince’s childhood companion, joins the Royal Tournament to determine the next ruler. During this quest, he travels across Euchronia, gathering support from its citizens while seeking a method to break the curse.

On release day, Metaphor: ReFantazio sold one million copies across all platforms. Critics praised its storytelling, setting, graphics, and themes dealing with political and social matters in real life, although some noted technical issues at launch. The game received multiple award nominations including Game of the Year from several organizations and ceremonies. It won the Game Awards for Best Art Direction, Best Narrative, and Best Role-Playing Game, earned the D.I.C.E. Award for Role-Playing Game of the Year at the 28th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, and took the Grand Prize at the 2025 Japan Game Awards.
