Final Fantasy VII Rebirth 2024
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a 2024 action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix. It serves as the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) and marks the second installment in a trilogy that remakes the 1997 PlayStation title Final Fantasy VII.
The gameplay of Rebirth merges real-time action with strategic and role-playing components, similar to its predecessor. The story begins immediately after the events of Remake, where players control mercenary Cloud Strife alongside a party primarily made up of members from the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE. Their mission involves traveling across the Planet to stop the megacorporation Shinra from harvesting Mako, the life essence of the Planet, as an energy source. They also seek to defeat former elite SOLDIER Sephiroth, who aims to merge with the Planet to gain ultimate power.
Production on Rebirth started in November 2019, before Remake’s release, and it was officially announced in June 2022. The core team from the previous game returns with the same roles, except Tetsuya Nomura takes over as creative director instead of director, while Naoki Hamaguchi becomes director instead of co-director.
The game launched for PlayStation 5 on February 29, 2024, followed by a Windows release on January 23, 2025. Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X/S versions were released on 2 and June 3, 2026, respectively. Upon launch, Rebirth received widespread critical acclaim and was honored with multiple end-of-year awards, including Game of the Year. Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the final entry in the Remake trilogy, is scheduled for 2027.
