Destiny 2: The Final Shape is a major expansion for Destiny 2, a first-person shooter video game developed by Bungie. It marks the eighth expansion and the seventh year of extended content for Destiny 2 and 10th year of content for the entire Destiny franchise. The expansion was released on June 4, 2024, following a delay from its original February 2024 release date. This title centers around the player's Guardian attempting to locate the major villain known as the Witness, who vanished through a portal created on the surface of the celestial Traveler at the end of Lightfall in 2023. The Guardian and the Vanguard must prevent the Witness from forming the titular Final Shape—the calcification and destruction of all life in the universe—and resolve the ongoing war between Light and Darkness, thereby concluding the first major saga of Destiny, known as the "Light and Darkness" saga. The expansion also brings back the character Cayde-6, who was previously killed during the events of Forsaken in 2018.

In addition to introducing new super abilities for existing Light subclasses, a new subclass called "Prismatic" was added, enabling players to combine and use selected Light and Darkness abilities simultaneously. The expansion also introduced new content throughout the game, including fresh missions, Player versus Environment (PvE) locations, Player versus Player (PvP) maps, player gear, weapons, a new raid, and the series' first-ever 12-player PvE activity.

Unlike previous years since Year 2, Year 7 did not follow the seasonal model that typically divided the year into four content offerings. Instead, three larger episodes were released throughout the year as standalone experiences, each split into three acts that continued the story after the expansion. These episodes were originally scheduled to release in March, July, and November respectively, but they too were delayed due to The Final Shape's postponement. Episode: Echoes began on June 11, a week after the expansion’s launch, followed by Episode: Revenant on October 8, and then Episode: Heresy on February 4, 2025. Two new dungeons were also added during this episodic content period. A free event titled Rite of the Nine started in May 2025, serving as a prologue to the next expansion, The Edge of Fate, which released on July 15, 2025, and initiated Year 8. This year was originally intended to begin the franchise's next saga, the "Fate" saga, but Bungie ended support for Destiny 2 after its June 2026 update. Despite this, the game remained accessible and playable. Year 8 changed how content was delivered by introducing two large seasons lasting several months, each beginning with a medium-sized expansion followed by a major update halfway through.

Each episode explored an "echo" of the Witness that appeared in different parts of the Solar System. Episode: Echoes featured the Echo of Command landing on Nessus, causing the Vex to behave erratically. The Guardian teamed up with Saint-14, Osiris, and Failsafe to battle a new Vex unit named the Choral Vex, commanded by "The Conductor," revealed to be Maya Sundaresh. Episode: Revenant focused on Fikrul, the Fanatic, who returned with an army of undead Scorn using the power of the Echo of Riis that landed in the Reef. This allowed him to mutate living Eliksni, requiring the Guardian to team up with Mithrax, Eido, and Crow to defeat Fikrul, rescue prisoners, and stop his reign of terror. Episode: Heresy dealt with the Hive pantheon of Oryx, Savathûn, and Xivu Arath, as the Echo of Navigation landed on the damaged Dreadnaught, manifesting as a version of the dead Taken King, Oryx. The Guardian joined forces with Eris Morn and The Drifter to enter the Hive Ascendant Realm, master Taken powers, and resolve the Hive Pantheons, ultimately deciding who would take Oryx's vacant throne. The Rite of the Nine event, which served as a prologue to The Edge of Fate, had the Guardian journey to Eternity in the unknown realm of the Nine and collaborate with the Emissary of the Nine, Orin, uncovering lore about the Nine.
