Social simulation

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is a 2026 social simulation video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It marks the third title in the Tomodachi Life series, following the Nintendo 3DS release Tomodachi Life (2013). The game features Miis, customizable avatars, living on an island where they autonomously form relationships and handle daily challenges under player oversight.

Development began in 2017, after work finished on the mobile app Miitomo (2016). Director Ryutaro Takahashi and producer Yoshio Sakamoto wanted to create a sequel due to the 3DS version's technical constraints. They aimed to include user-generated content to improve replayability. Character designs for the Miis were refined through experimentation, resulting in a more cartoonish style. Their robotic voices from prior games were preserved to keep their unique traits.

Before its launch, critics and fans appreciated the game’s enhanced inclusivity, especially its inclusion of same-sex relationships, which was a step forward from earlier entries. The title released globally on April 16, 2026. Reviews were largely positive, praising its customization features and comedic elements, although gameplay received mixed reactions for seeming repetitive. Criticism also arose over the lack of online capabilities, such as screenshot and Mii sharing. As of August 2026, Living the Dream has sold 8 million copies, making it the top-selling entry in the Tomodachi Life franchise so far.
